  • Challenger Society at Oceanology international 1 year 12 weeks ago

    Oceanology international attracted over 7000 attendees this year and it seemed like most of them visited the Challenger Society stand! We were kept on our toes with visitors ranging from technical and equipment developers to researchers and students. We were delighted to host two of our student members on the stand this year.

  • Fishing for Trouble: Inspirational art from marine waste 1 year 14 weeks ago

    There are millions of tonnes of floating plastic waste in our oceans. They represent a hazard to marine life, are unsightly and sometimes end up returning to land, creating an eye sore on beaches. In one effort, artist Francois Gunning has begun developing inspirational works of art from floating plastic waste that accumulates on his local beaches. 

  • Transatlantic Oceanography: A Meeting to Celebrate the Career of Prof Harry Bryden 1 year 14 weeks ago

    Harry Bryden, President of the Challenger Society, retired in 2011 (though it is not so obvious as he still works most days).  To mark this occasion a meeting will be held at NOCS.  During his time in Southampton Harry has worked for both NERC and the University and the meeting will be hosted jointly by both.

  • 3 SCOR Travel Bursaries to Challenger 2012 1 year 15 weeks ago

    The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) has approved up to 3 bursaries for participation of individuals from developing countries and countries with economies in transition (http://www.scorint.org/Eligible_Countries.pdf) in the 2012 Challenger Conference for Marine Science (www.challenger2012.org.uk).

  • Marine chemistry - A tribute to Professor Dennis Burton at Challenger 2012 1 year 17 weeks ago

    Professor Dennis Burton passed away at the end of last year leaving a significant legacy in terms of his contributions to marine chemistry and also through his friendship with, and mentoring of, many colleagues and students in the field. This session provides a forum for those with interests in marine chemistry, geochemistry and biogeochemistry to present and discuss developments in these subject areas.
